He was (he first to â offer his important Novelties directly to the public by huge display newspaper advertising, and the success he met with has revolutionized advertising methods in all lines. Up to 1880 no Seedsman or Florist had ventured to advertise anything more than: "Catalogues free to all ; It was about this time that a charming new species of Amaryllis (-1. Tvcatea) was secured by .Mr. Childs. Tests showed that spring planted bulbs began blooming immediately, and he issued a large illustrated advertisement, setting forth its merits and offering it at 15c. each; two for 25c. A deluge â of orders followed, and so satisfactory did the bulbs prove that for three years he continued advertising :it, selling, probably, a million bulbs. Up to this time his business had leen small and unimportant, but this bold â stroke and the success of the bulb brought him a large â¢patronage for his general Catalogue line of Seeds, Bulbs anil Plants. The Amaryllis was followed by the intro- â¢duction and large advertising of that greatest, of all Fuchsias, Stokm King. During two years Mr. Childs â¢spent $25,000 advertising this one plant in the newspapers of the country, and sold over $60,000 worth The success of this plant doubled, or trebled, his general business and placed him at the head of all retail Catalogue Seedsmen in the world, which position he has since occu
