View W across River Conwy at low tide to Caerhun Medieval church built on the site of four barrack blocks inside the 2ha enclosure of Canovium Roman auxiliary fort. The fort was built around AD77 (probably part of Agricola's north Welsh campaign) & rebuilt in stone in the mid-2nd century AD. The fort was situated beside a river crossing at the upper tidal limit of the Conwy. Roman roads connected Canovium to the forts at Segontium (Caernarfon) to the W & Tomen y Mur to the S. There was a bath-house between the fort & the river, a dock at the riverside, & an extensive civilian settlement (vicus) grew up. Pen y Gaer Iron Age hillfort is visible rear L of the church with the point of Penygadair centre rear. The hills are in the Snowdonia National Park but Caerhun is just outside its eastern boundary. Local Welsh ruler Rhûn, son of Maelgwyn Gwynedd, is said to have occupied the old fort in the C6th/C7th AD.
