It appears to become torpid during winter : my friend, Mr. H. Bill, has informed me that once, when digging up earth to cover a potato pit, he exposed two deer- mice in a little cavity, about eight inches below the surface of the ground : they were stiff and motionless, Init were sleek, and did not appear dead. He carried tlu-m into his house, and in the warmth they revived. There was no aji- pearance of a nest, nor any hoard.
