This. like all playgrounds in the city, is provided with showers, lockers and all accessories for sport lovers. A parkway connects Franklin Park with Marine Park, South Boston, where are situated boat houses, bathing beaches, a public landing and the aquarium. A bridge connects this park with Castle Island, on which is located historic Fort Independence, now turned over to the city by the National gov- ernment. If Boston parks are remarkable for any one thing in particular, it is in the opinion of most experts for the great amount of planting that has been done, and the successful treat- ment that has resulted. In Franklin Park the same varieties of trees found there, have been used in the new plantations, with a strong inclination towards the red oak. This tree has been found also best suited for boule- vard planting; at the points nearer the ocean, however, silver poplar, the Carolina poplar, the white willow, and white ash, have shown best results. English elm and European linden have been successfully used as boulevard trees. Althougli some foreign shrubs have been used, where a particular ef- fect was wanted, in general, native shrubs are more desirable, and the bulk of the planting has been accom- plished with their assistance, vibur- nums, bush honeysuckles, common bar- berry, hackberry. philadelphus. and the dogwoods being in the majority.
