Canon Square (Plac Kanonia) is a small, triangular square behind St John's Cathedral, in Warsaw's Old Town. The name comes from 17th century tenement houses, which belonged to the canons of the Warsaw chapter. In the middle of the square is the Bronze Bell of Warsaw. This bell was installed in the square in 1972, having been housed in the Warsaw National Museum. The bell, cast in 1646, was intended for the bell tower at the Jesuit College in the city of Jaroslaw (Yaroslav). Casting cracks in the body of the bell meant the bell could not be used, so it has never hung in any church. A memorial plaque, on the wall of the house on one of the houses commemorates the location of the last barricade defended by the Battalion Boncza of the Home Army (AK) in Warsaw's Old Town during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. The plaque translates: 'Place of the last barricade in the Old Town defended by soldiers of Battalion Boncza. On September 1st 1944, National Army grouping Rog Companies 101,102, 103 fought in the struggle for the Royal Palace, Cathedral of St John, the church of St Martin, Schicht House, Castle Square, House of the , Piwna Street, Canon Square and Old Town Square. To those who have passed away.' The buildings here, including the brick St John's Cathedral, were either destroyed or severely damaged by the Germans after the Warsaw Uprising.
