Few have been built since 1840, and vessels of this class are now rarely seen in the fishing fleet. A few large ones were built in the " forties," some of which carried flying jibs in summer, when engaged in mackerel fishing. Probably no more seaworthy vessels were ever designed; a few of them sailed well for the period in which they were built, and in rough water sometimes outsailed the clipper " sharpshooters '' of the early " ; They were substantially built of white oak, and some had long terms' of service.
