Besides the 3 penitentiaries named, Denmark has 95 jails, whichare used as places of detention, and in which also sentences to im-prisonment from 2 days to 2 years are served out. In these prisonsthere are solitary cells as well as common prison-wards. The jailsare communal institutions (about communes see p. 65); their supremecontrol is only exercised by the central administration.
