The system was gradually extended until in 1898the Vienna Tramway Company operated over 162 km (), and had an equipment of 481 horse cars, 44 motor carsand 34 trailers. The total number of employees was 4661. Statistics are given for 1898, because in that year the tram-way company was liquidated and the system was taken over,through an arrangement with the city, by a construction andoperating corporation formed by Siemens & Halske.
