His aircraft was shot down over Bulgaria June 28, 1944, when he and his crew were returning from a bombing mission over Romania. He was missing in action for 73 years until his partial remains were discovered by a team from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in 2017 and positively identified in September 2018.
