An experimental aircraft designed by Swedish inventor Carl Richard Nyberg from 1902. The aircraft never quite made it off the ground into the air.

Dreams have long been the driving force of many inventors. One who perhaps dreamed more than others was Carl Richard Nyberg, the inventor of the blowtorch and most obsessed with the dream of building the first functioning aircraft. The man with the strange aircraft is named Carl Richard Nyberg. He was born in 1858 and invented the blowtorch in 1882, with which he succeeded in creating a fortune. In a photograph taken in 1902, at his home on Täcka udden on Lidingö outside Stockholm, he is sitting in it. This is the year before the Wright brothers' first flight. Mankind has not yet learned to fly motorized aircraft. As early as 1878, Carl Richard Nyberg designed a helicopter-like aircraft that he did not get up in the air for a long time. The airplane problem, as he called it, then became his overriding dream to solve. He went very thoroughly and hired two eminent experts for measurements before building the machine, "The Fly", with which he dreamed of becoming the first aircraft pilot. Unlike the Wright brothers, Carl Richard Nyberg used a steam engine to power the aircraft. He had specially designed the steam engine to be as light as possible. Precisely the weight was perhaps the biggest problem for those who tried to build an aircraft with a steam engine before Carl Richard Nyberg. The "fly" was so light that it even had a weight per horsepower that was less than it was on the Wright brothers' it did'nt help. Due to the steam engine, the "Fly" still had too weak engine power. It could lift itself, but not an accompanying pilot. It was not Carl Richard Nyberg who won the race to conquer the air. Carl Richard Nyberg never got up in the air but ended his experiments in 1909. He died in his home on Täcka udden in 1939. There is still a hangar he built in connection with his flight experiments. Peter Du Rietz
