Barcode scanning of donated blood. Haematologist scanning vacutainer tubes with a barcode reader. Each vacutainer tube contains blood from a different donor, and the barcode is used to identify them throughout their analysis. Donated blood is tested for blood type, as well as being thoroughly examined for pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. If the blood is found to be healthy it can be used in transfusions.
