The cityof London, before the great fire, consistedmostly of houses with thatched roofs andoverhanging eaves. The houses were nearlyall of timber, each floor projecting over thatimmediately beneath—so that the build-ings on either side of the street approach-ed each other more closely as they ad-vanced in height, and the over-hanging roofsfinally brought them into almost immediatecontact. With houses so built, extinguish-ing appliances are almost useless, and a firein one house in a street almost certainlyensures the destruction of all the others,and places the whole town in jeopardy.
