TSPS promises wider use Another technological innovationbrightening the prospects of making internationalcalls is a scheduled change in theprogram of the traffic service posi-tion system (TSPS). In the fourth quarter of 1974 anew TSPS program will permitTSPS operators to process overseasassistance calls. Also, it will permitcustomers served by step-by-stepoffices to have IDDD service with noadded investment in equipment. Itwill reduce the cost of modifyingNo. 5 crossbar switching offices forIDDD, and, at the same time, it willpermit customer dialing of person, credit card, collect and pay-stationcalls. As a result of these changes, the year 1975 should see IDDD ca-. pability expanded to about 25 percent of the Systems customers, andmost of these customers will be ableto dial both station and person calls. Meanwhile, for the people at Burbank and Company, one ofthe three major shipbuilder-broker-age firms in the world, IDDD hasmeant a savings of time in makingtheir 200 overseas calls a month. For Peter Burbank, it has meantthat and more. Oh, I appreciate the speed andefficiency of it all—I really do. Butwhat I miss most about the wholeoperation is that when I get home,I cant dial overseas myself any-more. Because of the worlds timedifferences, sometimes its moreconvenient for me to call from myhouse. Its then that I realize howmuch I miss IDDD, and how fast Igrew used to it. I really wish we hadthis service at our home. Someday soon that wish willprobably come true. Richard Burke, who wrote this article,is an information supervisor at LongLines Headquarters in Neiv York.
