Hydrogen-methane flame from the combustion of a gas mixture of 77% hydrogen and 23% methane. This is part of research for the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory into the use of hydrogen fuel. Pure hydrogen and hydrogen mixed with natural gas (mostly methane) can both be used to fuel motor vehicles. Mixing hydrogen with natural gas reduces the nitrogen and carbon oxide pollutants produced during combustion. Combustion of pure hydrogen gas is even less polluting, producing water. While the technologies for widespread use of hydrogen fuels are in development, such hybrid fuels will reduce pollution in the transitional period.
