Nabothian cysts of the cervix. View of the outer cervix of a 37-year-old female patient, affected by cervical ectopy, showing multiple Nabothian follicles (cysts, white, round). Cervical ectopy is a condition whereby the layer of delicate cells that usually line the cervical canal or uterus extend onto the outer surface of the cervix (seen here), which is usually covered with stronger tissue. Because the cervix is covered with delicate tissue, it is more easily damaged than normal and has a tendency to bleed and become inflamed (red, cervicitis). Nabothian follicles are mucous-filled cysts on the surface of the cervix that are commonly caused by this condition.
