Illustration of the constellation of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the Zodiac. The constellation is shown as a centaur archer. The Sun is in Sagittarius between 22 November and 21 December. It is a large and important constellation, and the centre of our galaxy lies in the Milky Way (pale band, right) by the top of his bow. The path of the Sun through the sky, the ecliptic, is shown by the black and red line in upper frame. Illustration is based on a sky map by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), which was published posthumously in 1690.
