Head army nurses at Camp Kearney, CA, receiving gas instructions from Major Arthur Yale. In the photo, a nurse wearing a gas mask has it adjusted. Captain Lillie, of the British Mission, supervises the gas training and enjoys playfully tossing smoke bombs at the nurses. The officers in charge were impressed with the nurses' quick adaptability and considered the first lesson a success. The photograph was taken on March 3, 1918, by Lt. Jackson of the Signal Corps. It was censored and released on April 18, 1918, by the War College Division Laboratory.
