Cliffs of volcanic ash and pumice tower over a geologist exploring Deep Creek canyon during the summer of 1965. Volcanic deposits were laid down during eruption of Mt. Katmai in 1912. Katmai National Monument contains 2,697,590 acres and was established in 1918. The area features several of Alaska's active volcanoes, including Mount Triton, and the famed Valley of 10,000 Smokes.
