Thomas Hodgkin .. ..81 2 3 1913Beat, Northumberland. Died at Treworgan,nr. A Minister. Tottenham, as it was during the early partof last century, has entirely disappeared. In the noisy London suburb of to-day it isdifficult to recognise the quiet old village ofTottenham High Cross with its peaceful housesand gardens. Not only are the bricks and mortarof old Tottenham gone and the outward flavour ofold-worldliness vanished, but even sadder is thescattering of that society of cousins and friendswho lived in an atmosphere of quiet culture. Into this quiet Quaker circle ThomasHodgkin was horn, at the house in Bruce Grove,on the 29th of July, 1831. Behind him, on both sides, were long linesof Quaker ancestry. Six generations hack therew as a oertain Thomas Hodgkin living in the littleOxfordshire village of Shutford who is recordedto have married Ann Aicock in the year these two the Hodgkins were descended. It is impossible in a short survey to do justiceto all the men whose influence moulded thecharacter of Thomas Hodgkin in early them were his grandfather, Luke Howardthe scientist, his mathematical teacher De Morgan, and schoolfellows who afterwards became famous
