Each pit in the shop is equippedwith a home-made screw hoist for hoisting car bodies, aswell as a swinging and traveling crane with air hoistattached. All cars brought in for overhauling are takeninto this shop. The body is raised off the trucks with the chine and one Niles 42-in. steel tire lathe. There is also awheel grinder for grinding flanges. All flat spots areground out at the carhouses underneath the cars, but itis often found that wheels with chipped flanges can bere-ground when the flanges are deep and then can be usedover again.
