Infected episiotomy. An infected episiotomy scar (yellow, centre right), 7 days after the procedure was performed on a 26-year-old woman. Episiotomy is a surgical procedure performed during childbirth, in which an incision is made in the perineum, the tissue between the vagina and the anus. This eases the delivery of the baby. The incision may be directed to the side of the anus, as seen here, or be in a direct vertical line with it. It is repaired shortly after delivery, usually with absorbable sutures. The incision seen here has become infected and may require treatment with antibiotics.
