On the 12th of August, accompanied by Major Twining, I left theThree Buttes for the Rocky Mountains, the distance being about onehundred and ten miles. We encamped for the night in a very fine position,giving a full view of the group of buttes composing the Sweet-Grass Hills;for each of the three principal buttes is composed of one chief butte, sur-rounded by others of inferior size, the whole of them covering a consider-able extent of territory. The next morning we moved westward, traveled about twenty-eightmiles, and encamped on Milk River. From our camp we had fine viewsof the
