Europe, Mid Tertiary Period. Image 6 of 8. Computer artwork of the position of Earth's continents approximately 30 million years ago. This was during the Tertiary period, which extended from 65 to million years ago. The continents are slowly moved over the surface of the Earth by currents in the fluid mantle below the crust. Over millions of years, the continents moved into the positions they are in today. Areas that will become America are at upper left, and Africa at bottom. For the series showing Europe at different points throughout prehistory, see images E402/144 - E402/151.
