To hurrypast it, and listen to the roar of the avalanches,is a very unsatisfactory mode of enjoyment;it reminds one too much of letting off crackersin a cathedral. The mountains seem to beaccomplices of the people who charge fiftycentimes for an echo. But it does ones moralnature good to linger there at sunset, or in theearly morning, when tourists have ceased fromtravelling, and the jaded cockney may enjoya kind of spiritual bath in the soothing calm-ness of the scenery. It is delicious to lie uponthe short crisp turf under the Lauberhorn, tolisten to the distant cow-bells, and to try tocatch the moment at which the last glow diesoff the summit of the Jungfrau, or to watch alight summer mist driving by, and the greatmountains looking through its rents at intervalsfrom an apparently impossible height abovethe clouds. It is pleasant to look out in theearly morning from one of the narrow win-dows, when the Jungfrau seems gradually
