Dropsy courting consumption. Early 19th century illustration of characters representing the diseases consumption (left) and dropsy. During this period, the term consumption was applied to wasting diseases, especially pulmonary tuberculosis (lung TB). Dropsy referred to conditions causing accumulation of fluid (oedema), such as congestive heart failure.
