This tern wefound abundant for four hundred miles up the river. The riverwas so high that no sand-bars were exposed, else we would haveseen numbers of alligators ; however, before dark we saw a few largeones on some logs. The native name is cayman. I was toldthat there were several species. Shooting at them from the steamerswas prohibited by law some years ago, owing to careless shootingby which a native woman on shore was killed ; but our captaingave us permission to shoot when we got farther up the i^9 A FLYING TRIP TO THE TEOFICS.
