European paper wasps (Polistes gallicus) on their nest. They are social insects that produce annual colonies in paper nests. The wasps gather fibres from dead wood and plant stems, which are mixed with saliva to produce a papery material used to construct a water-resistant nest. Individual colonies are newly established each spring. These wasps are predators of caterpillars and some other insects.
