Leishmaniasis. Teenage girl with a lesion on her face that was caused by Leishmania sp. protozoan parasites. This cutaneous (skin) form, is the most common form of the disease. The parasites were transmitted by the bite of an infected sandfly. The lesion will heal, but can cause scarring. The healing process can be aided by drug therapy or cryotherapy (using liquid nitrogen to freeze the lesion). Photographed in Ethiopia.
