Thename of the man. painted on the engine,(lisually below the cab window) is in-tended to indicate that the man has be-come conspicuous, above his fellows, forthe saving of coal, or oil, or in some waymaking a record of economical perform-ance with the engine. The object is notonly to recognize, officially, the goodwork done, but to serve as an inspirationfor others. The Canadian Pacific Railway has notonly put this excellent record before otheremployees, but has created an artistic anddecorative design which is almost her-aldic in essence. It consists of a circularband of dark blue, with a marginal stripeof gold, below the cab windows, and onthis deep blue, the name of the railway. OF CIRCLXAR BAND OX LOCO-MOTIVES OF C. P. RY. occupies the upper half of the circle andthe full name of the successful enginemanis in the lower half; all the lettering beingin gold leaf, which standing on the blueband, makes plain reading, and is in goodtaste. Inside the blue band is crimson red,and upon this stands a white or silvershield. The charge on the shield is a(lark green maple leaf, (Canadas emblem)and this is veined in light green color. Adark brown beaver surmounts the shield,as a crest does in armorial bearings. The whole design is artistic, and has anational flavor which unobtrusively putsinto the mind of the beholder, the sig-nificant name of the road, and the objectswhich the proprietors, and the CanadianGovernment had in view when this greatnational undertaking was in its infancy,and when it was finally incorporated asa private concern in 1881, with a stale-a
