Selimiye Mosque AKA St Sophia Mosque, Nicosia.


Wood engraving circa 1896. Formerly Cathédrale Sainte Sophie (from the Greek Ayia Sophia meaning Holy Wisdom) constructed in the Byzantine period it became a mosque after the Ottoman siege of 1570. It was renamed in 1954 after the Ottoman sultan Selim II, who headed the empire during the conquest of Cyprus.
