The current is collected from the working conductorby sliding shoes of iron or steel arranged in a very similarway to that employed on the Bessbrook line. Fourteen electric locomotives have bAn supplied byMessrs. Mather & Piatt for working the line, each capable Vol. LXV, No. I.] ENGINEERING JOURNAL. of developing loo effective H. P., and of running at about25 miles per hour. The locomotives are constructedso that the shafts of the armatures are the axles of the ioco-moti\es. The driving wheels run at about 240 revolutionsper minute when the locomotive is travelling at 20 milesper hour. The locomotives have a fixed wheel-base, and. ,a motor is fitted to each axle, the axles not being coupled, but working independently. The current is conveyed fromthe collecting shoes through an ammeter to a regulatingswitch, then to a reversing switch, thence to the magnetsand back through the frame-work of the locomotive to therails. The locomotives are fitted with VVestinghouse auto-matic air brakes .ind also a screw hand-brake, and they
