Enlarged prostate. Sagittal (left) and axial (right) ultrasound scans of the pelvic region of a male patient showing an enlarged prostate gland (grey region at centre of each image). The prostate sits below the bladder (black). It produces a fluid that forms part of the semen. Enlargement (hypertrophy) of the gland obstructs the neck of the bladder, impairing urination, which may in turn damage the kidneys. In this case, a benign tumour (adenoma) is suspected. Treatment may include surgical removal of part of the prostate gland or the prescription of drugs that cause it to shrink.
