SACRO MONTE OF VARESE, NEARER VIEW. of a hill; it is an instinct in our nature to do so ; it isa remnant of the same instinct which makes sheeplike to camp at the top of a hill; it gives a remotesense of security and vantage-ground against an Italians seem hardly look at a highplace without longing to put something on the top of SACRO MONTE, VARESE. 331 it, and they have seldom done so with better effectthan in the case of the Sacro Monte at Varese. Fromthe moment of its bursting upon one on turning thecorner near the seventh, or flagellation chapel, onecannot keep ones eyes off it, and fancies, as with , that it comes better and better with every stepone takes ; near the top it composes, as on page 330,
