A thoroughfare of world-wide fame. It derived its name from the bouweries or farms between which it ran during the old Dutch later years the lower end grew to be a series of dives, saloons, shows, etc., and became the favorite resort of a tough element. Here the peculiar type of swagger-ing ruffian, the Bowery boy, was developed. The street has lost much of its former bad repute, and the boy has disappeared.
