From these photographs it is evident, therefore, that the causeof the failure of all of the wheels and tires, except the Schoenwheels, was due to the presence of slag flaws occurring near thesurface of the tread. It nppears, therefore that there are at least two causes for theshelling out of steel tires and wheels, namely, slag flaws and over-heating.
