Believing that Godhad called him to the Christian ministry, he thereforeimmediately began a course of religious reading, andin 1815 .vent on Anne Arundel circuit as an assistantpreacher, under the Presiding Elder, and in March,1816, was received into the Baltimore Conference of theM E. Church, which at that time included WesternPennsylvania. For several years following, his appoint-ments were in Maryland, Eastern Virginia and Penn-sylvania. In 1823, he was appointed Presiding Elder on theMonongahela District. In 1825, when the PittsburghConference was set off, he became a member of it, andcontinued there until he withdrew from the his connection with that Church, he filled anumber of prominent appointments, and served fouryears as Presiding Elder.
