Butwith the unprecedented growth in traffic inthe intervening years, the saturation pointon available frequency band transmissionspace was fast approaching. Bell Labora-tories engineers worked with Western Electricand Long Lines people to developthe new larger capacity system. TD-3s trial towers will rest on stationbuildings housing the power, amplifying andtesting apparatus. This new roof-mountedconstruction will shorten and straighten thewave guides which conduct the microwavesignals from the station transmitter to theantennas at the top of the towers. Five watts of power—less than theamount needed by a typical Christmas treebulb—is sufficient to send microwave signalson their way
