In looking over the stock at the mar- kets and the wholesale houses, one cannot help noting the lack of variety in the flowers. Retailers look in vain for something a little out of the ordi- nary, something they can interest a flower lover in as distinct from an ordi- nary flower buyer. There is room for the grower with new ideas as to stock, but he will have to do more or less pioneer work, owing to the sheep-liko tenacity with which the average retailer and stand holder, yes, and wholesaler, too, follow the same old line of least resistance. Whenever anything new is shown by a grower, he has to run the gauntlet of wholesaler and retailer, take the remarks made about his flowers as good-temperedly as he can and even- tually wear down the wall of prejudice and make good. Mums and dahlias are both at their best and the yards everywhere are full of flowers. But in spite of this, flowers clean up daily and the stock that goes to the trash can is usually worthy of just that destination. It is true that the grower has often to make a reduc- tion in price to the retailer who will help him out by gambling on an extra large bill, but this is only to be ex- pected at times of plenty. Possibly by the time these lines are read conditions may be quite different, but with summer weather in late October, no rain to damage stock and little fog, it is no wonder tha
