Amethyst gemstones. Amethyst is a purple variety of the mineral quartz (silicon dioxide). The name comes from a Greek word meaning \not drunken\", which probably refers to the wine-like colour of some varieties. Amethyst is found in various locations around the world, with each type being unique to that area. For example amethyst from the Ural mountains, Russia is a very clear and dark variety that is cut into expensive gemstones."
