We stayed for our midday restat Esdud (the ancient Ashdod), and then continuingour ride over very much the same kind of country wearrived at Askalon, and encamped close to a smallmosque and Arab graveyard, just below the ruins ofthe Crusaders castle, and under some noble old syca-more trees. It was a lovely evening, and we climbed up theslope to explore the ruins of the walls which lookseaward and are half buried in the sand whichhas been blown in from the beach during thecourse of many centuries.
