Brain anatomy, computer artwork. The right cerebral hemisphere (pink) is covered by the dura mater (white), one of the three meninges (membranes) that covers and protects the brain and spinal cord. The curved white and pink structure at upper centre is the cingulate gyrus, part of the brain's limbic system, a primitive part of the brain involved in emotions, learning and the formation of memories. It surrounds the putamen (oval), which regulates movements and influences learning. At lower right is the cerebellum (red), which controls muscle coordination and balance. To its left is the brainstem, which controls automatic functions, sleep and arousal and relays messages from the brain to the spinal cord (yellow, bottom). At centre are the two optic nerves (yellow), with the two olfactory nerves (yellow with orange processes) above them.
