CANNON, Martha Hughes, one of the first Utah women to receive thedegree of M. D., was born July 1, 1857,at Great Ormes Head, near Llandudno,Wales, the daughter of Peter Hughesand Elizabeth Evans. Her parents be-coming converts to the restored gospelthrough the preaching of L. D. , the family emigrated to. Dr. M. H. Cannon and daufhtor Gwendolyn. America in 1858. For two years theyremained in New York City, on ac-count of the fathers poor health, butwere then advised by Apostle Ei-astusSnow to go on to Florence, Nebraska,whence, in 1860, they crossed theplains and mountains in a coveredwagon, the mother walking most ofthe way, in order that her invalidhusband and five little daughters mightride. Annie, the youngest, fifteenmonths old, died while on the journeyand was buried on the roadside, andthree days after the family arrived inGreat Salt Lake City, the father, PeterHughes, breathed his last. A year later the widow marriedJames P.
