Porter's port call to Mombasa is the first visit of a Navy ship to the city since guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) in 2005 and only the third ship visit since 1999. Porter is conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in the Fifth Fleet area of operations with the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group. MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complement the counterterrorism and security efforts in regional nations' littoral waters. Coalition forces also conduct MSO under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so that commercial shipping and fishing can occur safely in the region.
