Curtis Nye Smith, 19 Congress Boston, Berberis ilicifolia {Subject of this weeks illustration) Berberis Uicifolia, which was introduced to collectionshere several years ago, has not proved hardy in exposed, but in somewhat protected ones it hasdone very well. Our plant in the photograph is wellsuited. It is at the base of a hill which shelters it onthe north and west sides, besides being near a dwellingwhich further shelters it. It was introduced here with the reputation of beingevergreen, but this it is not, although it is entitled tobe called half-evergreen. The photograph was taken inlate November when other shrubs near it had been leaf-less for a month or more. It was fully amonth later before its leaves commenced tofall, and not till early January was it entirelybare of foliage. Those who saw it in De-cember and were not acquainted with itsnature might be excused if they considered itto be a true evergreen. The flowers of this Berberis are are produced in clusters of fours; butof the fruit
