St Paul's church & monastery, Jarrow, founded AD681 by Benedict Biscop: the chancel (R) is his original chapel built of reused Roman stone, Victorian nave (L) is on the site of a separate basilica dedicated in 685. The two churches became linked by a pre-Conquest structure & then in 1072 by the Norman tower. At the same time the Saxon monastic buildings, abandoned in the early C9th after Danish raids, were removed & the monastery reconstructed on Benedictine lines. Looking N over site of the Saxon monastic hall (front) & Norman cloisters & garth with a well.
