Deutzia monbeigii ovary. Light micrograph of an ovary from a Deutzia monbeigii plant, showing, the thick 'felt' of hairs (trichomes, star-shaped) that cover its outer surface. These stellate trichomes each have twelve arms branching out from the centre. The trichomes spread in all directions and several layers. They help to defend the ovary from insects and molluscs, and also slow down water loss through transpiration. Magnification: x37, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
