This brilliant patina isof a full-bodied, rich, deep green tone, mottled with paler greenand sandy-brown and occasional spots and patches of the originalmetal. Interior bears an incised inscription in sixteen characters,the inscription reading as made by the emperor or king (prob-ably Cheng Wang, third monarch of the Chou), and indicatingthat the bronze was cast by the Duke of Chou for use as asacrificial vessel in the worship of his ancestors. The Dukeof Chou, one of the greatest statesmen of antiquity, was uncleand regent of King Cheng, who came to the throne at the ageof thirteen years. Teak cover, with knob handle of jade carvedin relief and undercut with cranes and lotus flowers and buds.
