St. Jamess had been holding aloof fromthe other Episcopal churches in Aberdeen,but in 1865 an invitation was receivedthrough Dr. Rorieon, of Peterhead, to jointhe Scottish Episcopal Church, a similarinvitation being sent to St. Pauls. Allthe Bishops of England recommendedunion, but, notwithstanding the strongfeeling in favour of the overture, it wasultimately declined because of the dissen-sion which, it was felt, would be sure tofollow. The desire for union seemed, how-ever, to grow among the members, a cordialfeeling towards the Bishop of Aberdeenbeing repeatedly expressed. This wasspecially the case about 1870, when thequestion of union was again raised. On28th September in that year it was pro-posed that the clergyman accepting thecure of St Jamess Church be required to apply to the Bishop of the Diocese for hie licence.
