SEZ Sporting Centre exterior. The Sports and Recreation Center is a multifunctional GDR building complex for sports and entertainment opened 1981 in Berlin-Friedrichshain. After the fall of the wall, it became expensive to maintain and it was sold in 2003 to Leipzig Business man, Rainer Löhnitz, for a symbolic one euro with the proviso that the swimming facilities be maintained. According to the authorities he did not fulfil the contract as he only restored the smaller pools. The Senate instituted legal action to reclaim the property in order to build a school and apartments. The District court ruled that the property does not have to be returned but the dispute is ongoing.
