A shell explodes in the Confederate trenches at Vicksburg, 1863. During the siege hundreds of slaves with General John Pemberton's army, who were used to dig and rebuild the trenches, endured the dangers of war with nothing to protect themselves. Often barefoot and poorly clothed.
